So on Friday I set out to Quivvy, knowing only it was somewhere near Belturbet in county Cavan. After asking some people about it,and buying a map I was pretty sure I would find it. The narrow local road led me through typical boring irish landscape -grass-sheep-trees.It was longer then I thought would be,must've been 1 hour walk before I got to some stone bridge.Right after the bridge was someone's house, and though map was saying there was a road leading left and another one straight ,there actually was only the left one,the othere one must be leading through the yard.So I just walked on the one that lead left, not knowing where the church was actually,as it wasn't marked on the map. Then unexpectedly ,after some 50 yards, there was some building right beside the road on the right side, that looked like a church,it's windows looked somehow familiar, and I was in doubt if it was THE one, actually I doubted it because in my imagination it was bigger and it was on a desolated island on a river(as I read on some site) with acres of land belonging to it,not a smallish church right beside the road and almost without any yard. From outside nothing gives any sign of anyone living there. Then my eyes fell on these words carved into the wall left of the door:"In the kingdom of the blind the one-eyed are kings".You know this, don't ya? :) Even after this I wasn't convinced it was Quivvy church, but after the first look through a window I was finally sure of it.I saw the drum-bodhran,that can also be seen on a website. I didn't know he wasn't living there anymore, and didn't know if he was inside or not,so it took me time to get courage enough to look through other windows, where I saw other instruments and equipment. There was a light in what from outside seemed to be his kitchen.
I was mostly grinning like crazy all the time because of the tension, thinking he might come back every moment,or just because of WHERE I was-think only of their last 2 albums recorded there
! I took some photos-will put them in the tribe photos after i have them done-and wrote a note on a piece of paper and put it in front of the door:"Thank you for the music" :).
Finally it was time for me to go back and catch the last bus to Dublin. On my way back I was a bit sad for not seeing him(although when I was there I was scared he WOULD come :)).
In the shop near the bus stop I asked shop-girl if she knew who was living in Quivvy (showed her CD),she said she had no idea.Ah,well... I was more lucky with an other girl who was waiting for the bus. When I showed her CD and asked if she knew it,she asked me :"You were there?!" Oh,here we are!
It turned out that she knew almost evrything I nedeed to know. That he's not living there for years anymore, that he got married, has a child and built a house near Quivvy.that they are having their samba school rehearsals probably in the old train station nearby, that "he's drinking in the Smith's bar" beside the shop, and also that her friend was babysitting in his house !! :). Weird what can one find out if one is not afraid to talk and ask! :) But I missed 2 things: I could have talked to the man who was outside his home beside Quivvy church, and could have tried to get in contact with that girl's friend.
That's about it. I surely will go there again. See what will happen. :) Also,if anyone of you,or anyone you know is coming to Ireland,I would be glad to go there with you, just contact me!
Long live MUSICA ETERRRRNAL !

I have seen her twice solo and The Dead Can Dance twice. The first time I had front row seats at the Beacon in NYC I think it was 1989, the same fucking week that I saw The Cocteau Twins. It was my 1st year of college and I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I also saw Siousxie and the Banshees for the 1st time that year and she is my alll time idol.
I saw DCD last year at The Hollywood Bowl with the Philharmonic and when she sang "The Wind that Shakes The Barley" alone on stage A cappella you could here a pin drop in that crowd of 3000, and it was outdoors!!!! A-Mazing.

That voice! Such range, such control. It's other-worldy. Never have I experienced a vocalist with such command of her voice. She played pieces from Dead Can Dance, her soundtracks and her latest album The SIlver Tree. Two keyboard players by her side and dramatic curtains draping behind her. This was a very special show as it was her first ever solo gig in her hometown of Melbourne. She's coming to America. You MUST see this show!

I had my browser open and I had my fingers ready to get the best seat I could. I though it odd when I was in the very first few to click my mouse and I manged only to get row d. Now let me validate this all in saying I saw DCD in seattle on the 18 of 05, If you were at that show you might have seen a row of us in front of the general seating. I was in that row, center stage and not more then 10 feet from lisa. Those tickets cost me 60 usd a piece. A very very fair price.

Now I am sad to find that there is a reason I didnt have the opotunity to buy those front row tickets. The company that is producing the show and tour "livenation", pre sold prime seating for an obscene price to scalpers guised as "Ticket brokers". Now neither ticket master and livenation had any of these seats open to us.

But if you want to pay 210- 245 per seat you can still get front row center they have plenty of these seats here.

As promised, here's the raw transcript of the interview I did with Lisa last week in Melbourne Australia. She's currently rehearsing in Melbourne for the beginning of her new world solo tour.

The early 4AD days were pioneering days in contemporary music. Were you aware of that at the time?

I was aware of the fact that there was a lot of new work starting to grow that didn't fit into the mainstream or stereotype of those things that I'd grown up with in Australia. I was excited by it and felt empowered by it. We were given the possibility to climb with complete independence with our artistic voice, we were completely free. Even though there were cynics like NME (magazine)who were working for the record companies, which we didn't know at the time, we thought they were completely independent, they were still being very cynical about a lot of things that were new. It didn't disturb me because it didn't seem to stop anything growing but there was definitely a force of new voices and excitement at the time, which I believe there is now. What we must look at and must remember is that when we make music, especially when we are beginning, it is a direct response to those things that have been our environment. It's a language that we have been building in the abstract since the first words we learn, and we bring those into reality, and if you look at contemporary music now and look at the age groups of say 15-20 that have created contemporary music, and you think of the last 15 years and think of the things that they have been exposed to when they first opened their eyes, it helps you to understand the evolution of this abstract language that has been growing in the last 15 years that is encapsulated in their work. You understand? So I believe it was at the stage that we were growing up in Australia, that we hadn't yet entered the age of information but we were certainly cut off enough from stereotypes to start to develop our own way of thinking. And there was a lot of that behaviour, quite intelligent behaviour and quite interesting music as a reaction, not necessarily against those things we had no choice listening to. In a sense a childish celebration, maybe a little cynical towards them but hopefully something that evolved past them. That was the beginning of the thing that was happening in Australia. When I got to london I realised that there was a whole encyclopedia of areas that we could go in with music. We had absolute freedom to go wherever we wanted and for the first time, instead of having to be constricted by certain instruments .. you know, computers became available. We had the Commodore 64, and the Mirage and we had an orchestra and oboes. It became very exciting because suddenly we had all these voices to interpret all these musical harmonies and thoughts that we wanted to put to paper. That was the thing that was really the explosion that happened when I was starting out. We were just beginning to broaden our palette of colours, that was the explosion, that post punk time.

You have an incredible fan base world wide who hold your music deep in their hearts. It's almost like its something secret that the mainstream world doesn't know about. Did you have someone or music like that when you were growing up?

I come from a musical family, there was irish singing. My family always sang. I didn't have to feel that music was something you bought or something that you thought you had to go out and acquire. It was a part of your tradition in the home. So no I didn't have those forces that drove me forward to make me want to be a 'star' in music. It was never my motive. My motive with music has been provoked from the reaction from the very early age of seeing the emotional reaction from people I have sung to. I realised from an early age that when I sang that it created an emotional reaction and I took that journey. I saw that there was something worth exploring.

You had a successful tour with Brendan as Dead Can Dance last year in America. There were rumours of another album. is anything happening there?

Not at this stage. I don't see it happening. There has always been a difficulty between Brendan and I creatively. The work we have done together has always had amazing polarity and been very strong because we're very critical of each others input. And take a lot of direction over each others input which causes friction. The tour we did last year had its internal problems. I wouldn't like to say that I would never make another record with Brendan because I just don't know. We're not planning to make one right now.

Your voice is one of the great ethereal voices in music along with Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser and Enya. Do you enjoy listening to music of artists with similar styles to yours?

Yes I love Elizabeth Fraser and I love Enya but I also love Kylie Minogue. I don't have many hard and fast rules about music. If I like something, I don't care what genre it is or whether it's current. If it moves me, it moves me. I don't have preferences. Often my children will put together pieces of music for me off i-tunes that they think I might be interested in. Then I hear something they have made for themselves... and often I am more interested in the music they have made for themselves than the one they assumed I would like. Music is an illusive thing. If I was to have so many hard and fast rules like that, how would the music I make have been as eclectic.

Is it difficult to feel creative in the soundtrack environment when you are dealing with strict deadlines?

It's extremely difficult and very different. You really need to be highly skilled and need a lot of help...need to be physically fit.

Did you find much interference from the Hollywood people when you were doing Gladiator?

I loved writing music for Gladiator. I think some of the best pieces of music I have written I did for Gladiator. I was exhausted when I did Gladiator because I had just finished The Insider, I was very, very tired. There's something about fatigue that drives you almost like neurotic addiction to writing your work. I'm not sure if it's a great place to be emotionally. It's a great place to be creatively but I'm not also sure the both things walk together in the same line. I loved doing Gladiator. I loved the communication. I learnt many things from working with Hans (Zimmer)and Ridley (Scott)and Pieter (Bourke) and Klaus, who I wrote pieces of music with. I continue to work with Jeff Ronin. I continued to work with Hans after the film. I didn't write music for him but I went insane for him, in lots of other projects.
My favourite film to do was Whalerider because it was a director who came to my home. We sat down, we didn't have a team of producers and all of these people analysing the pieces so much that you don't even know what you're writing in the end, and don't even like what you re writing in the end.... and you just want it to go away. But we had this amazing connection and she really tuned into the music . She knew exactly what she wanted to communicate with her film. She couldn't care less what anyone else thought except her own film editor who was extremely intelligent and very sensitive and handled the situation beautifully. That's the only reason why I would consider doing anymore films because I had the experience of doing that.

Do you find technology helps or hinders your creativity?

No, it helps. It makes so much possible. You know, computers are our friends and they are our enemies, they don't always work but we wouldn't put up with their failings if they didn't give some promise and success. I believe that I couldn't do the work I do now in my home. What would I be doing if I didn't have technology. I'd probably just be singing. It has liberated me to the point where I can compose pieces of music and invite a director to my home and show them things and experience music together. I love technology. I'd like to see it used more intelligently than in things like music and rocket science

In what way?

In how to balance ourselves and equalise ourselves in a fragile way with our environment, ecologically. I read that music and the science for developing weapons are the two things that are growing at the quickest speed with computers and technology. You know, the bigger the lie, the bigger the shadow. But I'd like to see more attention and intelligent use of water, architecture, transport. We don't have the excuses anymore.

When you come up with new musical ideas, are you hearing the basics or do you hear the additional instrumentation too. How vivid are the ideas?

The way that I work is purely a story of the heart. There's a shelf inside the abstract body of every human being. I know in New Age thinking they have ways to describe this kind of thing as chakras and so on but I don't really know what these things mean. But I know from my own experience working with voice that there is definitely a shelf and there's a conduit and there is a gateway. If we listen with our soul and ears and be very focussed and grounded, that it has the same impact as if you have an electrical fence that can travel for millions of miles, and if the current is reliable, the current will travel for millions of miles, and that is how it is with the work, for me. I am not responsible for its creation. It's a frequency I respond to and describe. And I believe that it's usually a response to those things that have inspired properties that have given me a sense of well being and love and coolness and peace. They tend to be the things that I am magnetised towards when I'm creating work .. a deeper feeling and a depth of sensitivity.

Your work is very much about emotion and feeling. When you are working on a piece of music, you wake up every day and have different feelings and emotions over the duration that you are working on this music. How does that effect the work as it is progressing?

I'm very ordinary. People are very disappointed when they meet me. They expect me to be this guru type of person and I am not. I'm just a basic ordinary person. I work very hard ... but so do the people that work in the garden at my home, and so does my mother when she does the cooking. We all work hard and we all have to be focussed. I don't see it as being so different.

When you are recording, do you like to experiment with different microphones and room ambience or do you like certain techniques that have always worked for you?

I don't use headphone, I refuse to use them. I use an Avalon (microphone preamp)and I don't experiment much with the settings. I like the Avalon because it has very basic EQ, very easy to use. Its valve and adds warmth to a digital recording. I record through
the Avalon and when I am mixing, I have my voice come back through the Avalon, which I recommend that all singers do. If they have the possibility with stereo valve equipment, to use it for any acoustic instruments whatsoever. Focusrite or Manly .. that can bring life to a digital recording. As long as I have some reverb I'm happy. Pathetic isn't it! (laughs)

What kind of feelings are you experiencing on the verge of playing to an Australian audience?

Very, very, deeply touched. All of our lives we analyse where we were born and where we grow up.Things come up and we look and wonder why we don't fit in, or do we fit in or what do these people think. The advantage we have living in Australia, and I've mentioned many times before, is the fact that we are still in connection with nature. Its still possible to drive out of the city and look back and see how absurd its presence here is, see how foreign. It helps us to understand that we are nature and we are architect. We're creative but evolve organically and automatically and we resonate those frequencies. There's something incredibly brave about the artistic motivation of people in Australia.
(Unfortunately, at this point for some reason the recorder stopped! It was almost the end of the interview anyway. Lisa went on to say she would have a lot of interesting instrumentation on stage and that it would be the beginning of a world tour)

My first experience was in the World of Music shop in Berlin (at the back of the Wertheim department store on the Kurfurstendamm for those who know). I was in browsing one day in 1987. At the time, it was mostly vinyl on sale with a few CDs. In WoM, they had along the top of all shelves at about eye level, rows of album covers with a pair of headphones by each of them. I'd go around the shop listening to some pretty good stuff. Anyhow, I came across a cover showing something pretty gothic - a statue outside a crypt. I had a listen to a couple of tracks and immediately went and bought the album. This, of course, was "In the Realm of a Dying Sun". It's still my favourite DCD album.

maybe y'all get this already, but just in case not.

Greetings everyone.

Here's a little bit of heavenly news for you.

A release of a newly made portrait of Lisa Gerrard is due in September!
Now is the time to for anyone to excuse themselves from whatever they are doing
and for a good reason actually hit the TV button and enjoy something out of
the ordinary. This is something many of us have been dreaming of and waiting for.

Some words from Clive Collier, director:

"After a year in production, 'Sanctuary', a 90min documentary on Lisa Gerrard is
about to be released on DVD. The official website is up and can be found at
http://www.sanctuary-lisagerrard.com

------THE FILM------
The film is an intimate portrait covering many aspects of Lisa's life and career.
Her musical beginnings, Dead Can Dance (including 2005 tour), film composition
and many aspects of her style and approach to her work told insightfully by Lisa
and those who have worked with her.

As well as plenty of interviews with Lisa, the film features interviews with
Michael Mann, Hans Zimmer, Russell Crowe, Graeme Revell, Harry Gregson-Williams,
Brendan Perry, Niki Caro, Pietro Scalia and many other musicians, family and
colleagues.

'Sanctuary' also features lots of previously unseen material including rehearsal
footage, soundchecks, photographs and concert footage. It also includes many
previously unheard tracks of Lisa's many of which will feature will be released soon.

------THE DVD------
The special features includes an exclusive brand new video directed by Lisa and
myself for a new track from Lisa's forthcoming album. It also has a photo gallery,
discography, interview with myself and a special film on some fundraising activities
for REACH organisation in Mali, Africa which Lisa has been actively involved in.

------RELEASE------
The DVD official release date is projected to be the beginning of September.
However, to ensure one of the first copies as it will be on a first come first served
basis, we are offering the chance to pre-buy now from the website. You can also
see some short excerpts from the film on the site too. At this stage, there are no
plans to provide the film for rental or retail sale. The film will be internationally
broadcast on television later in the year and into early 2007. More details will
come as they are confirmed."

All the best from Lisa Gerrard's Message Board Team.
but David is the best frame drummer................truly world class and I'm so excited for him.

When you get to 'Ullyes' you get back to the proper DCD sound. I love this album.. It brings me to tears with it's beauty at times.. but it has faults. I have the same problem with 'Spiritchaser'. My favourite track on on 'A passage in time' has to be 'Cantara' - Lisa I love you......
The track is called "Trance Circle" and represents the grooves and the spirit that I catch at the various fire festivals a.k.a Burning Man, Starwood, Firedance, etc.

I really have to rant for a minute though:

It has been ten or so years since I've been to a concert, but what the HELL has happened to audience etiquette?

~People text messaging throughout the concert. (Are you
REALLY that indispensable/unable to focus on one thing
for more than a minute that you need to multi-task at a
concert, for crying out loud?!?)

~Cell phones ringing! (This is just inconceivable to me –
there is NO reasonable excuse!)

~People pulling out their cell phones every 10 minutes to
check the time or to see if they missed a call. (Aargh!
Just, AARGH!)

~People fidgeting in their seats constantly. (What? Are all
DCD fans adult ADD cases?)

~People showing up a halfway through the concert. (This I
just don’t get! I mean not one or two, but literally half of
my row, and a third of the row in front of me. Then there
was the couple that showed up half an hour or so into the
concert sat down in the wrong seats, had to move when the
people who were in their seats showed up 5 minutes later…
then got up never to return five minutes after that!?! Huh?)

~People getting up in the middle of a song and pushing
past you to get out… (I understand that sometime
nature or nicotine calls, imperatively, even, but really…)

~People coming back to sit down in the middle of a song,
and once again pushing past you to get in. (Used to be
at this type of concert the ushers wouldn’t let you back
in until the end of a piece so as not to disturb the other
audience members or distract from the performance.)

~People chatting incessantly throughout the show. (Again,
Huh?!? Why are you here if not to LISTEN to the music?!?)

~People lighting up pot as soon as the lights went down
and then every fifteen minutes or so thereafter. (This is not
your standard rock concert after all, and while I guess I
understand that everybody has to have their own experience
of the concert…but, well, it was annoying and disruptive.)

It was absolutely INSANE! I was insensed! What ever happened to just sitting quietly, reflectively and LISTENING to the music...?

As I said to begin with, I will treasure this experience for a long time to come, but my enjoyment was, for the most part, IN SPITE OF my fellow audience members.

Did anybody else find the audience to be incredibly disruptive to their experience, or am I just and old fuddy-duddy at 35yrs. of age?

OK, let me preface this posting with the fact that DCD is near all time favorite status for me, if not ALL TIME favorite. I am a die hard for their music and sound. As a musician who has been inspired by their music, I will *always* see them live in concert. Before you slam me for this posting, understand I share your passion, hence, my observations...

Now then, I attended the 2nd Oakland Show on Fall Equinox. I also attended every other show that DCD has played here, save their 1st tour, and was also at the Palace of Fine Arts gig many years ago (back then, I camped for the tix and got front row, this time I camped and got balcony...things have changed.)

I miss Ronan O'snodaigh and Robert Perry, as well as a couple of others. In fact, I only noticed one of the original members in the lineup, besides the obvious Lisa/Brendan combo. They added allot, Robert with his Low DD Irish whistle, and Ronan with his high-energy Timpani drumming (for those who haven't seen Ronan, he plays running in place the WHOLE show - apparently, this is the traditional way to play :-)

I almost didn't recognize Brendan with his shaved head, but another thing that was different was his energy and Demeanor onstage. He was less grumpy and more "fired-up," and he joked once or twice with the audience....me thinks he missed touring, but a welcome change nonetheless.

ok, now for the one ya'll will *really* like....

LISA, honey, please stick to what works for you. Your voice is angelic, NO DOUBT, it takes me to places beyond the body.....but the BLUES? I'm sorry folks, "Lisa sings the BLUES" should *not* be in their billing. There were folks walking out during that song (which was rude and they *should have waited or left before hand,) and granted it was at the end of the show, but *personally* I think she should stick to what works. Metallica should *not* play country music, the Rolling stones should *not* play Hawaiian music, and Lisa, well...I LOVE you; Let's leave the Blues to B.B. King.

I did notice DCD going back to some of their more "gothic" sound in their new stuff, which (depending on what your tastes,) can be a good thing. I will finish with the fact that I waited 10 years for that show, and thought I would never see them again....I am so very glad I went. Dress up a little more next time, folks! Its a special occasion! *smiles*

Peace. You may now commence the bludgeoning :-)

it must have been 1983 i had, together with some friends purchased tickets for a performance by the Cocteau Twins in Leiden, Holland. We all were realy chuffed about it 'cause we had missed out on their first performance the year before. One that was already legendary and we were sure not going to miss out this time around. One of the group had also recently bought a record (yep, no compact disc at that time) of a band that supposedly would be the supportact. So we all went down that to the venue full of anticpation of seeing the Cocteau Twins play live!! Well, our musical would turn that evening and things would never be the same. Because the much talked about supportact was Dead can dance! And from the moment they appeared on the small stage (i was standing only a few metres away slightly higher and had a excellent view) and started playing i was blown away. Their beautifull, clear voices singing those lyrics and the strange deep and multi-layered music took me totally by surprise. It was a musicalexperience of a spiritual level i had never experienced before and few times since. They played their first record (which i didn't know at that time) and many songs that appeared on later records. Needless to say that i was not the only one that night who experienced something almost not of this world. And the roof came down and they came back for two!! encores. When they finally went i and everybody around me was totally bewildered and amazed and not sure i it realy did happen! And the best was still to come! The Cocteau Twins!!!
Well, from the supreme high during the DCD performance i and the whole crowd went to a considerable low during the show of the Twins. Unspirited, back vocals and small things that constantly went wrong. After a very short time (approx. 45 minutes) they went of stage. Elizabeth Fraser was looking sad and unsure of herself and the rest looked like they knew what had happened.
During a period of about ten years i saw DCD perform a number of times and everytime the magic was there. A couple of years after that performance in Leiden i saw the Cocteau Twin again. This time in a much larger venue and although the show was lightyears away (in a positive sense) from the first time it still was not......magicall! Not like their records. And while i write that i realise that every show i seperate and can be better or worse than the one before that.
Somewhere during the mid-nineties i lost track of both groups and thought they had split up. It was however a pleasant surprise to find out that DCD still perform and when they play Holland again i will make an effort to get a ticket and see them. Hopefully the magic is still there, with them.
To everyone who's going to see them, much enjoyment.

Take care, stay well.

I bought the Dublin show recording (first date in the tour), and I'd be willing to trade a burned CD-R copy of the release for CD-Rs of any of the other shows (I think they issued thirteen different live concert recordings in all?), if any of you bought a different show and want to get a copy of the Dublin concert. Send a message to me privately and we can work out the details.

Sorry, but I don't have time to make copies for everyone out there who might possibly want one, I'm only interested in trading for other LEGIT recordings of the 2005 tour, not selling or trading for other material. Cheers...
